In case of swelling, it is important to maintain the area in an elevated position. Sometimes, severe sprains and strains can result in fractures and may also need corrective surgery. If surgery is not required, then your doctor may wrap the injured area with an ACE bandage. He may also apply a splint or cast so that your joint can be kept stable for healing. Usually anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants can also be quite helpful in such conditions. Your physician or specialist can also let you know if an MRI is required.
